The New York Times contradicts both the New York Observer’s report and a New York Times “Dealbook” blog item in May, naming the purchaser of the penthouse apartment at 71 East 71st Street (aka 740 Park) formerly owned by Annenberg heiress Enid Haupt as MBNA credit card heir Raymond Lerner. Per the Times, the real purchaser is John Thain, formerly of Goldman Sachs, now the head of the New York Stock Exchange. What happened to Lerner’s bid to move his large family into the smallest apartment at 740 Park? Was he turned down by 740’s notoriously prickly co-op board?
