According to this Extell promo video, “the buildings that shaped this famed skyline”–the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building–are the context in which to view the real estate development company’s towers like the Aldyn and the as-yet-unenclosed One57. “We aspire to create a reputation as the very best,” intones the narrator as computer-graphics-enhanced images of Extell’s generic buildings gleam like jewels against New York’s otherwise dull skyline. But the “vision, quality, excellence” extoled in the video are conspicuously absent in Extell’s oeuvre. Is Extell “New York’s premier developer,” or its most self-deluded one? Yes, Extell builds tall and expensive. But it’s the hubris displayed here that’s priceless.
