In 2014, House of Outrageous Fortune broke the astonishing story of how an unemployed 73-year-old genius, a reclusive tenant at the Mayflower Hotel on Central Park West, held out against eviction by the prospective developers of the luxury condo Fifteen Central Park West–until he got a $17 million payoff to move–and a free apartment at the nearby Essex House, to boot. The tale made the front page of the New York Post that March 4 and then circled the world. A similar story is on the front page of today’s New York Times, and cites the example of Herb Sukenik, now deceased. Wherever he is (and the developers might have an opinion about that), he is certainly smiling. Here’s to you, Herb.
