Back in 1992, Madonna and photographer Steven Meisel created a photo book called Sex with lots of nekkid pictures of the entertainer and metal covers that so scratched my book shelves, I sold it. I probably should have held on to it as today, Meisel is having a moment, what with a book of his photos of Linda Evangelista just out, an Yves Saint Laurent reissue of Sex on the way, and Friday’s auction at Christie’s, Madonna X Meisel, featuring signed Meisel images of Madge. Though he stopped talking to me while I was profiling him, designer Stephen Sprouse and model Teri Toye for Vanity Fair for a story eventually published as “The Odd Squad” in 1985, I used the interviews he’d already given me and many more (including one with Avedon, who tartly questioned his originality) to profile him as “Madonna’s Magician” on the cover of New York on the Sex release, material later repurposed in Focus, my book on postwar fashion photograpers.
