I’m quoted in today’s New York Times obituary of Alice Mason, the real estate broker and hostess. For lesser beings like me, an invitation to one of her dinner parties was a signal of, if not acceptance, then a certain achievement. I still recall my thrill when I saw fury in the eyes of the gossip columnist Suzy, aka Aileen Mehle, as I entered Alice’s tiny—and rent-controlled!—apartment the second time. It was also the last time, as Suzy’s disdain—I’d dared speculate on her age in New York magazine—caused the subsequent revocation of my visa. But Alice was gracious about it—and remained one of my primary sources. I’m also quoted in USA Today on the subject of Jeffrey Epstein, but the less said about that the better.
