Fashion designer Mary McFadden has died at age 85. I told the story of her colorful life and distinguished family in “Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary,” a New York Magazine cover story in 1990. It was reported during the makeup and breakup of the then-51-year-old’s relationship with her 22-year-old fourth (or was it fifth–hard to remember) husband. Though hers was one of the most dramatic, twisty tales in the 20th Century fashion industry, it was, in my memory, my worst-selling cover in all my years at New York. Perhaps that’s why I remember it, and Mary, so fondly.
