Today, President Joe Biden announced Thomas J. Vallely as one of twenty citizens to receive the Presidential Citizens Model this week, alongside Liz Cheney, Bill Bradley and others. Vallely is one of the nineteen Baby Boomers featured in my book My Generation, published in 2000, and available today as an e-book. Like the others, Vallely, a veteran of the Vietnam War-era Marines who has dedicated his life to reconciling that nation and ours, was chosen for inclusion because he demonstrated the wild diversity of a generational cohort long tarred as uniformly feckless and irresponsible (ok, boomer!). At the time, I had no idea many of those profiled would remain on the front lines of culture, for both good and ill, for another quarter century, but aside from Vallely, the cast of characters included (in alphabetical order), Federalist Society founder David Macintosh, #MeToo casualty Russell Simmons, Donald Trump and Marianne Williamson, now seeking the chair of the Democratic National Committee. Not all good company, but not bad, either. Kudos, Tommy!
