It’s been years since this website changed much, but now, a new section has now been added. In 1996, Nancy Novogrod, the editor of Travel & Leisure magazine, asked me to start writing for it, and my first cover story the next year celebrated Thanksgiving on St. Barthelemy (pictured). I looked at my becoming a Contributing Editor as a reward for several decades of magazine writing–and remained on the T&L team until a regime change in 2012, when I moved my travel writing to Departures and its offshoot, Centurion, under, first, the late Richard David Story (we’d shared a cubicle for years at New York magazine), and next, Jeffries Blackerby. Then, last year, both print magazines were shuttered in a kind of corporate liquidation. While the Travel & Leisure stories remain online, the death of Departures and Centurion caused its online archive to be inexplicably vaporized. That inspired me to post a selection of my travel articles from all three magazines, as well as a profile of developer Aby Rosen, written for Centurion, which I’ve added to the Profiles section. I hope they’ll all find new readers here.
